Frame numbers of K75 and K100 |
The following chart is explaining the relationship between frame number and model. It gives only a rough picture, so you won´t be able to tell a production month by the frame number. In addition, newer models as from K1 to K1200 are missing.

What´s the production month of my BMW ?
Regarding the K series, the frame number and engine number are not equal. As a deciding factor, most of the parts have casted-in the production month. For example, each brake hose has a white plastic ring showing its age, in case of the described K100 “BREMBO DOT3 07/83”. Even if the front brake hose was renewed some time ago, the rear one should be still original in most cases. Add-on components are usually slightly older than the engine as they are obtained from third-party manufacturers. In case of this K100 RS, the oldest part is a toolbox cover which shows the year 1982. On the other hand, a fairing part is from 1986 which may be a hint for an accident.
Is this the original engine ?
The key to the production date is the engine number, which is located below the oil filler. The scheme is as followed:
104EA 4383 3485
This engine number belongs to a K 100 eight valve (104 EA) which was produced in the 43rd week in 1983 (4383). 3485 is the number of this engine. By the way: this bike, a “RS”, was sold in May 84, so it was seven month old by this time.
