paralever pivot and uni joint play questions

  • I pull my final drive from underneath my K1100 today, and found 2 disturbing finds...
first the pivot bearing looked like this:
    [Blockierte Grafik: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4DMzYTZxbYA/S-EwN372HDI/AAAAAAAAB1k/azZYsASEe4g/s640/DSCN6526.JPG]
clearly showing 3dents on the upper/inner ring.

Are there standard (SKF/FAG/Koyo/timken) bearing on the market to replace this pivot?

The cage (containing the rollers) also shows signs of un-roundness. but this is hard to show on camera.

The most disturbing bit was the fact that the bit in the next picture had clear up and down play (the bit hanging out was fine, the uni-joint seems ok, but the bit that is deeper in the housing (the other fork of the uni joint) could move!)
i mean this bit here just visible:

Is there play allowed in there?

  • Hello!
Well there is a straight replacment for pivot bearings: FAG 32203-A or SNR 32203.A, etc.
Gosh! My fault 32203 is not that bearing :(, it is swing arm bearing. More over I can't find direct replacement for those bearings in catalogue :(. Guys form K11OG suggest such solution: http://rubberchickenracinggarage.com/bushings.html.
Take a look at table made by one of Flying Brick "Fathers" (Petzi AFAIK)
    Bearings table
A great care must be taken while torquing those bearings - to loose or to tight ant they are gone :? .

    Best regards,

  • In the mean time i found that table too!! thanks!!

tomorrow i will try and find a supplier here to get me the bearings.

the main bearing (in the final drive) is ok.
    the splines also look ok.

any ideas why the uni-joint is wobbely when connected to the final drive spline?

  • just replaced mine 4 weeks ago 56$ cdn from BMW each, take care torque ing them.

I've bought a replacement drive shaft, mine has audible and feel-able play at each end...
    today i replace the shaft.

the bearings where looked at by a BMW mechanic (also the owner of the place) and found to be ok.
just clean them and regrease them.

tomorrow i will test ride the new shaft...
