Oil leak from water/oil pump

  • Hi guys,
I have about 4 drops of oil per day (bike standing) leaking out of what appears to be a drain hole at the bottom/front of the water/oil pump.
What do I have to do to fix it? Excuse the lazyness, but I'd rather be told by you "been there, done that" guys, than experiment myself.
I presume that if not attended to quickly, could possibly cause water contamination in the oil. I'm going to a m'cycle rally tomorrow but its only a 200 kilometer roung trip....should be OK? Many thanks, OoB

Been there and done that :) In fact just finished the job last weekend.
    1. water/oil pumps are driven by a singles haft.
    2. you will need the seal kit. Make sure that you get the new water impeller unless you already have one. This is the minimum kit to do the job:

    3. depending on the state of the shaft you may (probably) need another. I got my parts from Motobins ... they appear to be reasonably cheap.
    4. removing the pump is a snap. remove the 9 bolts to reveal the impeller. That will also dump the coolant so if you want to keep it, catch it in a bucket.

    5. remove a 7 or so bolts that hold the pump body in place. 2 long ones are inside the coolant space and the others are at the perimeter with 3 hidden above the pump body.
    6. you don't need to drain the oil as you will loose about 0.5L as you remove that pump. stuff the holes with rags and leave a container under the bike to catch drips. Note that oil will expand and contract with temp so the catch container will be needed all the time.

    7. with the pump out removed you can unbolt the impeller (6mm Allen key is needed to hold the shaft steady. I find that a vice is very handy when doing this.
    8. drive the shaft out from the water pump side. I use a brass or a plastic drift.
    9. now the fun starts. You will most likely find that the seals are rotten, rusted and brittle. so drive them out and clean everything well. I had an ultrasound bath, but I think that boiling the whole thing in some dish washing detergent will be just as good.

What you may find is this, (old and new). Shaft is corroded and the oil seal spring has worn a groove onto the shaft. Ajays suggest repair by build and grind, but you may find a cheaper option in the UK (zoom in on the old shaft).

    10. put seals in place. I use a smear (thin) of silicon sealant as lubricant to drive the oil seal and the water seal in place.
    11. Coolant seal in place:

I wrote the rest at the other forum. Bert also has a bunch of pics and instructions from others. see here:

    Hey Ned,

you might wanna try the Tasmanian Freycinet Riesling

Thanks for the tip :) yep, Chateaux De Cardboard is my choice when doing this. There were two Crown Larger empties in the background but I though to appear very sophisticated and only show wine. :)
One bit of advice when drinking Australian wines... when in doubt Yalumba wines are a good choice.

  • Hi Ned,

thanks for these impressive photos and your documentation. I'm gonna switch PeterKR from the german part into this thread, i hope he's allowed to copy the photos onto his technical site and also the K-wikipedia. Until now, nobody has shown so clearly the desaster of the worn shaft.

    Cheers!

  • ...with taking reference to Ned I suppose :D

There is another oil/water pump repair instruction on the main page of FB under 'Wie geht das' but I have the feeling that the part numbers do not match (maybe they've been changed some time ago). Would it be possible to have a list of the needed parts and their BMW-part numbers?
